Kliklok Provides Wraparound Solutions

August 01, 2005

BRISTOL, UK — The huge growth in the convience foods market has not gone unnoticed at KliklokWoodman. Over recent months the Bristol-based machinery company has helped a number of companies throughout Europe find solutions for their packaging requirements – including Unilever, Premier Foods and Park Cakes.

The trend towards wraparound sleeving of ready meals, dairy pots & other prepared foods has been welcomed by Kliklok as the perfect opportunity to showcase their Certiwrap machines – the C80 capable of up to 80 sleeves per minute, and the C150, which as the name suggests runs up to 150 per minute.

Another noticable trend is the steady increase in demand for 'shelf-ready packaging'. This has encouraged marketing experts to create innovative designs such as 'stand up features' on sleeves allowing finished packs able to bepicked readily off the supermarket shelf.

Trolley loading machines are a good example of the shelf-ready idea. You may have seen the plastic containers of 1pint, 2pint, 4pint & 6pint of milk sitting on shelves on a metal trolley that is simply wheeled straight into place in the supermarket aisle - the Kliklok Woodman trolley loader has been instrumental in this concept and they are the ONLY UK manufacturer of trolley loading machines.

Another shelf-ready idea is the Kliklok Woodman Display Card Loader – a machine designed to automatically attach small bags to display cards, for point of sale presentation – we have all seen nuts, crisps and other snack foods displayed in this way hanging in pub bars. Kliklok Woodman is the only commercial manufacturer of DCL machines worldwide.

The food processing & packaging industry tends to have peaks and troughs, as with most other businesses! The packaging industry is highly competitive and there are always new ideas on the horizon forbetter, more dynamic, more attractive packaging & product presentation. The trick is to keep up with these trends and offer cutting edge technology to cope with them. Kliklok Woodman operates a system of continuous improvement, and allocates a large proportion every year into research and development.

The company is always watching out for clever innovations in packaging techniques and are often required tobuild machines with customised features to accommodate special carton styles – gable tops, hanging tabs, tapered shapes etc. A recent example is for Rachels Dairy in Aberystwyth, producers of organic yoghurts. Kliklok was asked to design a specialmechanism on their Certiwrap C150 sleeving machineto accommodate a small tab in the sleeve which was 'kicked-in' by special guides on the C150. This created a retaining feature to hold a multipack of organic yoghurts safely in place. This mechanism was also used for another C150 machine recently installed at Premier Foods in Lifton, to wrap custard pots under the ‘Ambrosia’ brand name.

Further innovations from Kliklok Woodman were on display at Interpack 2005 when the company launched its new generation of bag makers, the Compak II and the Polaris II, plus the introduction of the Servo HSR, a servo driven high-speed endload cartoner with speeds of up to 250 cartons per minute. The exhibition was a huge success for Kliklok, who were able to introduce visitors to the wide range of machinery they have to offer – bagmakers, cartoners, closers, sleevers, trolley loaders, product handling, shrinkwrappers, display card loaders, even lithoplate wrappers. Kliklok Woodman have invested 60 years of experience and expertise into developing new & exciting innovations for the packaging industry and will continue for many years to come.
